EVERNEATH is the first novel by debut author, Brodi Ashton and it’s an amazing beginning to what will be an amazing series! I’m not big on the Greek mythology but I do remember learning about it way back in Middle School, but I love books that take a myth or legend and rewrite them for a setting in today’s world. That is exactly what Brodi has done with EVERNEATH.
It started off a little slow for me, nothing too horrible where I didn’t want to continue reading, obviously but I wasn’t drawn in from the get-go. However, you only have to go a few chapters in until sucks the life right out of you. And, unlike in this book, I mean that in a good way.
Even though I wasn’t hooked right from the beginning, I did feel for the lead character, Nikki Beckett. She spent a century (which equates to only a few months in our world) in Everneath getting her emotions sucked from her by an Immortal named Cole. When she decides to return to her world, she’s marked by the Everneath and given only six months until she is taken away, forever. She spends these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack who is a dreamy football quarterback.
Life is difficult for Nikki when she returns. It takes a long time before she can even get any of her emotions back in the slightest. It makes it a rough journey, watching Nikki struggle with the fact that her life is like a ticking time bomb, she’s just waiting for it to go off. It doesn’t help that while she’s trying to find peace and say goodbye to those she loves most (her father, little brother, Jack and even her best friend) that Cole has come back to the Surface to try and convince Nikki to come back to Everneath with him. He wants to overthrow the current Queen and have Nikki rule Everneath with him, as his Queen.
Truly, its heartbreaking, watching Nikki struggle with what she knows is right (staying away from Jack) to what she can’t let go of (the love she has for Jack). It’s hard, on every party involved. It’s hard for the reader because you want to feel sympathy for Nikki, you want her to be happy because she at least deserves that but then you see how hard her disappearing hit Jack and do you really want to see him go through the same pain? I couldn’t help but love Cole. He’s an ass, sure, but there’s something about him that’s so damn attractive. But Jack completely stole my heart.
The ending. Don’t even get me started on the ending. Torture. Plain and simple. I cannot wait until the next book in this series. Now I must wait over a year . . . but I know it’ll be worth the wait.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA Fantasy. There’s no vampires, werewolves or angels but it doesn’t matter. The idea of Everneath and the choice of becoming immortal is all you need. It’s getting a lot of buzz and its buzz well deserved. I definitely recommend everyone who reads YA to pick up a copy in January, you won’t regret it.
