From the author of the Birthmarked trilogy comes a fast-paced, psychologically thrilling novel about what happens when your dreams are not your own. This book was really good but at the same time, really weird. Especially the last quarter of the book . . . it really screwed with my head. Enough that I'm certainly intrigued for the next book. While I'm not exactly sure I'm happy with the ending or the feel of the last quarter of the book, I'm invested enough in the characters and the unique story that I am definitely giving it a go.
The Forge School is the most prestigious arts school in the country. The secret to its success: every moment of the students' lives is televised as part of the insanely popular Forge Show, and the students' schedule includes twelve hours of induced sleep meant to enhance creativity. But when first year student Rosie Sinclair skips her sleeping pill, she discovers there is something off about Forge. In fact, she suspects that there are sinister things going on deep below the reaches of the cameras in the school. What's worse is, she starts to notice that the edges of her consciousness do not feel quite right. And soon, she unearths the ghastly secret that the Forge School is hiding—and what it truly means to dream there.
Let's be honest, before you even read the description of this book it's the awesome cover the reels you in. It's simple but yet, it's not. I can't wait to see what the final copy looks like because it's just such an awesome cover.
This is my first book I've read by Caragh M. O'Brien and I was eager to see what it was about. I have friends who have read her other series and absolutely love it. It's been on my radar for awhile now but I just haven't found the time to give it a go. The concept is totally unique and it totally sucks you in to the story. It's quite disturbing, on many levels, as well. When you set the book down and think about the possibilities of this happening to you, it makes you cringe and maybe glare at doctors. Or maybe that's just me...
But you know it's all about the romance for me, usually and this book did NOT disappoint. Rosie is so different from all the girls (and even the guys) who attend the Forge School, which is like a reality TV show but a school at the same time; while many attendees at the school do extreme things to get attention and higher viewer rating, Rosie would prefer just to be herself and concentrate on the reason she's there . . . making films. Then throw in the kitchen boy, Linus, in to the mix and things start to go from rather boring to interesting in a matter of hours. Don't worry, it's not insta-love (yaaaay) but there's definitely an attraction there, for both of them.
The first three quarters of this book, to me, were outstanding. I hardly could put the book down but then things took a weird turn toward the end of the book. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that ending and I'm not sure how I feel about it (which seems to be the norm among early reviewers) but it's left me intrigued enough that I'm dying to find out more.
I didn't find there was as much of a mystery to what was happening as there should've been but, for me, that didn't take away from the book. While I love books that leave you guessing, this was just interesting seeing our heroine, Rosie, find out things, piece by piece.
It's a book I would definitely recommend to those who love Sci-Fi and books that are a bit out there, because this definitely it. The story is unique, the romance is perfection and the writing is spectacular. When you get to the ending, remember, there are two more books coming!
