Ruins by Dan Wells
(Partials, #3)
Release Date: March 11, 2014
Publisher: Balzer + Bray; 464 pages
Kira, Samm, and Marcus fight to prevent a final war between Partials and humans in the gripping final installment in the Partials Sequence, a series that combines the thrilling action of The Hunger Games with the provocative themes of Blade Runner and The Stand.

There is no avoiding it—the war to decide the fate of both humans and Partials is at hand. Both sides hold in their possession a weapon that could destroy the other, and Kira Walker has precious little time to prevent that from happening. She has one chance to save both species and the world with them, but it will only come at great personal cost.

So, we've got something special here for you. If you follow the tour, you'll follow a timeline leading up to the Partials war. If you haven't gotten a chance to read this series yet, this might peak your interest enough to make you pick them up (you really should, these books are fantastic!). Each timeline will have one word in it that will earn you an extra entry for the awesome giveaway (see giveaway below).

2040: China invades Russia and forcibly annexes Japan (one of the world's biggest consumers of oil, but with no intrinsic source). The US attempts to aid Japan (an abortive military action called The Nihon Invasion), but is repulsed by China's overwhelming army. China starts eyeing the Alaskan reserve and Canadian reserves, and world tensions rise even further.

2041: The US, Canada, and Mexico form the North American Defense Initiative (NADI), merging their militaries and economies in an attempt to protect themselves from foreign interests (mostly China, but to a lesser degree also Brazil). The biotech industry, relying very little on fossil fuels and wartime resources (ie, metals), continues to thrive, but ParaGen is quick to broaden their customer base by reaching out to the NADI military—an industry still reeling from the loss of their drone fleets, and thus ripe for the introduction of artificial organisms.

2042: The European Union and India both collapse, due to a combination of poor oil access and their dangerous proximity to the nuclear fallout from the destroyed Middle East. The world economy, already in tatters, falls apart. China severs all ties to the rest of the world: no imports, no exports, complete economic isolation. As China controls a huge percentage of the world's resources, this plunges the rest of the world into a desperate fight for survival. The NADI nations normalize into a kind of “second world” status, weathering the change better than most others. International tensions realign around China as a common enemy; NADI forms a tentative alliance with Brazil (the world's sole remaining economic powerhouse) and what's left of Russia, joining forces to forcibly "open" China and return their resources to the common pool. The Isolation War begins, though it will remain a relatively “cold” war for several years.
