Stephenie Meyer
I found out while I was at work about 3 weeks ago that Stephenie was doing a book signing at the Free Library of Philadelphia. I immediately took that day off work, and started planning my trip to Philly. Luckily for me, since I don't drive I was able to convince a friend of mine to drive us to Philly for the signing. Then 2 weeks ago, it was announced that there would be an advanced screening of Stephenie's next book to film adaptation The Host. The screening was to take place the night before the signing with a Q&A with Stephenie, and two of the stars of the movie Jake Abel and Max Irons. Once again I immediately jumped on this, but I also decided instead of going back and forth from Philly (I live in New Jersey) that I would just camp out overnight after the movie screening, and wait in line for the book signing. Yes, you read that right. Camp out overnight in the dead of winter, but after seeing the movie (I will be posting a movie review closer to the release date of the film) and the signing it was all worth it.
My personalized copy of The Host
As I've said before in my previous write ups of author events, I much prefer signings at independent book stores and libraries over major retail chains. The Free Library of Philadelphia was very accommodating. I called them earlier in the week of the signing, and asked them if they have a cut off for the amount of people Stephenie would sign for. I was told that it is not their policy to turn anyone down during their book signings, and that as long as you are in line between the time listed for the signing that you will get an autograph.
The library was very organized in this event. A sign was posted outside where the line would start, and they sent an e-mail to all registered for the event giving us the rules for the signing. And because it was so cold outside, at 9 am when the library opened they allowed the first couple of hundred people to wait inside. This was very nice of them. I've gone to signings where no matter the conditions of the weather, the staff would just have us wait outside.
Stephenie didn't come to the signing alone. She brought Jake and Max with her, who also signed autographs. So not only did everyone get to meet Stephenie, they got to meet 2 actors as well. I decided to wear my The Host t-shirt that I brought online a few years ago. The rules of the signing were that Stephenie would sign two books, but since this was a tour for the Host she would only personalize copies of The Host. I decided to bring my hardcover of The Host and my copy of the white paperback cover of Twilight.
My signed The Host poster
Now I do not get starstruck. But no matter how many times I see Stephenie I just get so emotional. Her books really did change my life. Sometimes it's really hard to describe to people. Because sometimes people just don't understand, especially if you met me after I read the Twilight books.
I was the 2nd person on line to meet her. And when it was my turn, she looked at my The Host shirt and commented on it. She said that I was the first person she's seen wear that shirt. So of course that immediately made me smile. I told her how much she means to me, and that her books really saved me. And even though Stephenie had a lot of people to sign for, the library didn't rush us at all. I was very happy with the time I had to speak with her.
Stephenie was at one table and Jake and Max were at another table. Jake and Max were very kind, and signed my The Host poster. And I again I don't get starstruck, but Jake and Max are extremely good looking and both were sweet.
I am very thankful for coming to Philadelphia. She said that she is currently working on the sequel to The Host novel, and I can't wait to read it.
