UNDER THE NEVER SKY is a new, interesting dystopian story. Dystopian has become the newest crave in YA literature and I have to say, it’s definitely one of my favorites. I haven’t come across to dystopian story that I haven’t liked. And that continues with UNDER THE NEVER SKY. This is Veronica Rossi’s debut novel and I absolutely love all these new, debut authors.
It’s disturbing to think about living in a Realm that is completely make believe. There are no risks in life, no pain, no suffering and it seems like you could live for a very long time. How is that even living? Not seeing the world or people for what they really are? It’s a very interesting concept and you get to see a lot into this make believe Realm that Aria has grown up in.
I can’t even imagine living in a world where everything you see and experience isn’t actually real. Pain, it’s a horrible feeling but it makes us human. And when her world is ripped from right in front of her, it makes for a huge challenge. Pain is something she has to endure day after day once left in Death Shop; the world outside of the Realms.
Aria is an easily likable character; one in which you feel for her once her life is completely flipped upside down. I was excited to see that she was starting to live life, as one should truly live life. In the real sense. No more Realms, no more pretending, if you will. She experiences what the outside world in Death Shop, under the never sky is doing to her mind and body with an Outsider named Perry.
This book switches back and forth from Aria and Perry’s points of views. I love books when you get to read from different characters perspective. It adds more to the story. You get to see what a person is really feeling, or truly thinking instead of having a character assume that is what he/she meant. Love it! I adore both of these characters and one of my favorite things from this book, that was so refreshing from stories I’d read before this, was the romance builds. It’s not ‘insert some hot guy, girl swoons over how good looking he is, can’t stop thinking about said hot guy, etc, etc, etc’. Refreshing, indeed. Not that there is anything wrong with a handsome fellow coming into a story and a girl swooning but it’s just over done…a lot. So thank you, Veronica. The change was needed.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good dystopian/post-apocalyptic story. If you want to read a story where it’s not all about romance and swooning, you should pick up a copy of UNDER THE NEVER SKY. I’m not saying there isn’t swooning involved, for the reader or the character(s), because there is – but - it’s not filled with it. It’s filled with an exciting, new story of a world we don’t live in. I can’t wait to read more, especially with how this book ended.
