Kill the beast. Win the girl.

A strange beast stirs fear in the kingdom of Lochlanach, terrorizing towns with its brutality and hunger. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity understands her duty to the kingdom though it pains her to imagine marrying a stranger. It would be foolish to set her sights on any particular man in the great hunt, but when a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention, there’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not keen on marriage. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast and protecting his family—yet Princess Aerity continues to challenge his notions with her unpredictability and charm. But as past secrets collide with present desires, dire choices threaten everything Paxton holds dear.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale, “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, outlawed magic, and a princess willing to risk all to save her people.

I wish I were a natural redhead. I have the freckles and the pale skin, why couldn't I get the hair, too? I know - this is how I start my review for this book but it's true. This family is known for their fiery hair and it just makes me sad that I can't have it. Dying the hair red is such a pain because it fades so fast (I know, cause I've done it before). So excuse me while I sit here, envious of this family and their amazing hair.

Now that that is out of the way, let's talk about said characters and the story. I really enjoyed our main character, Princess Aerity. I love her personality, her family dynamics, her hair (admit it, you do too), her willingness to put everything above her own happiness. She's something else and I especially loved her with her cousin.

Speaking of family - I love the relationship between Pax and his younger brother, Tiern. They are both strong, in completely different ways. They are amazing individuals but I do believe they are stronger together. The ying to the other's yang. If you will.

*highlight to view spoiler* I will say, I have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed when it comes to her cousin. This Lief/Leif (I can't remember how to spell it lol) guy rubs me the wrong way and, as odd as this might be, I'm in love with Harrison. He's perfect for her and I know, I just KNOW, he's going to get the short end of the stick - if he even survives. He's so in love with her and it absolutely breaks my heart she or anyone else for that matter, doesn't see it. *end spoiler*

I really enjoyed everything about this book - the romance, the action, the story, the characters but I'm having a really hard time putting everything in to words for you. It's definitely very different from the authors SWEET series and I think it's such a great thing. This is more my style (fantasy for the win) and she does a great job creating a new world for us to enjoy. The cliffhanger isn't bad which is really surprising since this is a duology and all but that means the wait won't be as torturous.

If you are a big on fantasy, like I am, you will want to add this book to your list or if you already have added it to your list, you want to go out and get it now. It's such a fun read and it promises so much more in the final installment.

Thank you so much to Harper Collins for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
