I have a problem with this book. A serious problem. I thought this would hold me over or give me some sort of satisfaction with having to wait until August for the final book, The Beauty of Darkness but this book did the complete opposite. I finished it and I badly wanted to stay in this world and just fast forward to Lia's conclusion. Cruel. That's what this book was.

BUT.

I'm okay with it. Isn't it an author's job to torture us readers? This does it's job. But it's also a beautiful, lovely short story that at least gives you a bit more in to this world. One thing I'm starting to realize with Mary E. Pearson is that she can make you fall in love with all her characters (well, the ones you should like) and swoon over the guys who deserve it. Her characters are so strong and so real that I don't feel like it's just some fictional person I'm reading about. I feel like I know them. I'm with them. This is how I want to experience reading. I want to make friends with the characters, as weird as that might sound.

Morrighan is wonderful. She's intelligent, kind-hearted and hopeful. Her and Jafir are amazing individuals but even moreso together. I can see how a kingdom started on her behalf. In this story, love does concur all. There is nothing love won't accomplish as long as you have that person by your side.

Novella's are hard to pull people in to especially if they're not with the same characters you already know in the story. The fact that she can get you connect to the characters, to this world (though the same world just way earlier) in less than 100 pages is something else I bow down to her for. This series makes me want to go read all of her books. Her writing is beautiful, her storytelling is marvelous, her character development is flawless and her world is breathtaking. I want more of what she can offer me.

Even if you haven't read The Kiss of Deception or The Heart of Betrayal, I would suggest this book. It introduces you to their world, it gives you more background than what we had going in to this story and I think it's enough to get you to experience her writing that you'll want more.
