I will start this off with saying I was very hesitant to start this book. I was super excited to get a copy at BEA but then people I knew were saying some rather iffy things about it and when I start hearing that, I start questioning myself whether I want to really try it or not. I'm sure most of us are like that BUT . . . while I can understand some of their issues, I have to disagree with them. This book was rather entertaining; slow, at times, absolutely but beautiful. My favorite part of the story probably was closer to the beginning when she first travels and ends up on a ship where she meets Nicholas for the first time. That was the most entertaining, enlightening and just down right fun for me. It slowed down some after that but it was never dull and never boring.
I absolutely loved Etta and Nicholas - together and as individual's. I think I really enjoyed Hall and Chase, too which might also be why I enjoyed so much of the ship aspect of the story because it involved them. I never once liked Sophia and I stand with that decision. I was glad she was getting sea sick and I never wanted her suffering to end. Harsh but true.
You were warned that this story is far different than her other series, The Darkest Minds and I'm here to tell you that it's the truth. While both good, both are two worlds apart. Which is great because it shows the depth Alexandra has as an author. There are those who write the same stuff, basically and then those who can challenge themselves and write very different pieces of work while also being the same quality of work. Hats off to you, Alexandra Bracken, for succeeding in that.
Time travel isn't something I find myself venting in to often because I don't find it very believable or enjoyable but I gave this a shot. I think I also liked this more because the time periods they travel to are ones that fascinate me. I was clearly born in the wrong time because give me something 200 or so years ago and I'm in heaven. That time just amazes me and I would wear a dress if I could go back in time then (those who know me know how big a deal it is to get me in a dress so this is saying something).
There was humor mixed in to this story, especially between Nicholas and Etta. Whether it was them not understanding each other because of the time difference with them or just with how well they got each other, it was entertaining and romantic. I liked the growth of their relationship with how it first started out with lust, as a lot of attractions do but the more time they spent together, the more that lust starting to grow in to something real. Nicholas was an absolute gentleman and he was polite.
It leaves us with a cliffhanger (shocking, I know) and it makes me dread having to wait for more.
If you're looking for a fast paced story, this might not be the one for you but if you're looking for something a slow burn, fun, beautiful story - I think this might just be what you're looking for.
