Have you read the Winner's Curse yet? Have you loved it, like I did? Are you excited about the Winner's Crime next month? It's amazing - better than the first book, in my opinion. So I'm here today to celebrate the upcoming release of the sequel but also to celebrate the beauty of the first book. The publisher, Macmillan, asked us to answer one question and it's got me thinking - there are so many answers to this one question so here's my answer and I'd love to hear you answer in the comments!

The ‘Winner’s Curse’ is an economics term that means you’ve gotten what you wanted – but at too high a price. What would you pay too much for?

Where do I start with this? I could sit there and say I'd pay a lot for immortality or maybe to become rich & famous or to become successful. I could pay too much for any of those things. But above all of those things that many of us would love to have (some of us would maybe only take a few of those) I want happiness. I want to live my life full of happiness. We know how hard that is in today's society so I feel like asking for this, receiving this could come at a price much higher than anyone, including myself, is really willing to pay.

Happiness can come from many things; love, success, health, normality - many, many different things. I want it all. I want to be happy and to never have a day where I wasn't. I know that I would annoy a lot of people but it's all I'd want. Because then I'd feel like my life was lived to it's fullest. If I was never unhappy then this life was worth it. I was worth it. That's what we strive to do in life - make a mark, no matter how small, in this world and I feel like complete happiness is a way to do.

Marie Rutkoski is the author of The Winner's Curse, The Shadow Society, and The Kronos Chronicles, including The Cabinet of Wonders and The Celestial Globe. The Cabinet of Wonders, her debut novel, was named an Indie Next Kids’ List Great Read and a Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year, among other honors. Rutkoski grew up in Bolingbrook, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago), as the oldest of four children. She attended the University of Iowa, where she took Writers’ Workshop classes and studied with Pulitzer Prize-winner James Alant McPherson. After graduating, she lived in Moscow and Prague. Upon receiving her Ph.D. from Harvard University, she held dual appointments as a lecturer there in both English and American Literature and Language, and History and Literature. Rutkoski is currently a professor at Brooklyn College, where she teaches Renaissance Drama, children’s literature and creative writing. She lives in New York City with her husband and cat.
