Dark World by Cara Lynn Shultz
(Dark World, #1)
Release Date: May 27, 2014
Publisher: Harlequin Teen; 384 pages
Paige Kelly is used to weird--in fact, she probably corners the market on weird, considering that her best friend, Dottie, has been dead since the 1950s. But when a fire demon attacks Paige in detention, she has to admit that things have gotten out of her league.
Luckily, the cute new boy in school, Logan Bradley, is a practiced demon slayer-and he isn't fazed by Paige's propensity to chat with the dead. Suddenly, Paige is smack in the middle of a centuries-old battle between warlocks and demons, learning to fight with a magic sword so that she can defend herself. And if she makes one wrong move, she'll be pulled into the Dark World, an alternate version of our world that's overrun by demons-and she might never make it home.
I am super excited to be a part of the DARK WORLD blog tour and to help spread the good word around about this amazing book! We got the chance to interview Paige and after having read this book, that really made me excited. Paige is a fantastic protagonists with an amazing personality. Without further ado, please let me welcome Paige to the blog!
The things that people said about you not just behind your back or within earshot to you but straight to your face, how did you keep your head held high and not running for the hills crying?
At first, I was more worried that what they were saying was true—that I really was crazy. But once I found out that I was talking to ghosts, and not hallucinating, it was easier to brush off the comments. I mean, at least I knew the truth, right? But it does get to me sometimes, because I’m not crazy! It’s like I’m serving a sentence for a crime I didn’t commit.
How relieved were you when you found out you were talking to ghosts instead of them being a figment of your imagination? I mean, I know it’s not much of an improvement but it’s less crazy . . .
It was reassuring to know that I wasn’t nuts. I didn’t feel crazy—but I’m pretty sure crazy people don’t think they’re crazy. So at first, it was a huge relief. But once I realized that I was talking to ghosts, that meant I had a whole new set of problems. At least crazy can be helped with therapy or medication. There’s really no way to “cure” me of seeing ghosts. And I couldn’t tell my parents the truth. They’d think I was officially nuts. So I had to lie…all the time. Logan’s the only one who’s ever known then real me.
You’ve lent the shy boy, Logan, many different girly pens, what has to be your favorite . . . that just thinking about it puts a big ole grin on your face?
I have one pink pen that has a giant flower on the top. It writes in pink ink, too. He just loves that one.
At the end of your adventure in this book, can you look back on your growth and even recognize the girl we first met? Are you happy with the direction you’ve grown?
I think so. Well, I hope so. I like to think I’m the kind of person who handles problems head-on and that I’m going to continue doing that.
You could have one song that’s the anthem to your life, what would it be? Actually, if you could have one to you before your life turned upside down and your current life now, what would they be?
I have a couple. Paramore, “Let the Flames Begin” has always been an anthem for me. I had no idea how, um, appropriate that song would eventually be. Right now it’s Death Cab for Cutie, “I Will Follow You into the Dark.”
Do you feel like your father will ever be able to look at your without seeing his child who almost died and then kept suffering from all these ‘episodes’?
I hope so but…I doubt it. I think he’ll always worry.
What’s the craziest thing your cat, Mercer, has done?
I had a duvet on my comforter. Well, he burrowed in between the duvet and comforter … and couldn’t figure out how to get back out. I got home from school and heard him meowing. I ran into the bedroom, thinking he was sick or hurt, and instead, I saw this lump in my comforter moving around. He’s adorable but he’s really not that bright. And yes, I took the duvet off.
What’s your biggest regret?
I don’t regret becoming friends with Dottie at all, but I wish I had done it in a way that made me less of a spectacle. Talking to her in a crowded bathroom and then threatening to punch Pepper in her defense probably wasn’t my most brilliant idea.
If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
I should probably be responsible and pick a politician so I could make laws to save the planet or something but I’m going to be completely selfish and say someone who saw the Ramones play at CBGB. Or someone who went to Woodstock. Or maybe someone who performed at Woodstock.
If you were to sit your parents down and tell them about how much your life has truly changed, how do you think that conversation would start? More importantly, how would it end?
I’ve thought a lot about this. I’d start by telling them to remain calm. From there, it could go anywhere. Sometimes I think they’ll believe me. Other times I think I’ll have to burst into flames for them to believe me. Then I worry that I’ll give them heart attacks so I think, “No, don’t do that.” And then I worry that they won’t believe me and will pull me out of school and send me to some kind of boarding school for super-crazy people. I have no idea how it would turn out…which is why I haven’t told them anything.
