When Freedom Airlines flight 121 went down over the Pacific Ocean, no one ever expected to find survivors. Which is why the sixteen-year-old girl discovered floating among the wreckage—alive—is making headlines across the globe. Is it sad that I really hope there's more of Cody in the next book? This is here a grown a-- woman hoping to see more of a thirteen year old boy. I swear, not like that but he was just such a fun character. He's such a little nerd that it just makes the reader protective of him. He's kind of like that younger, sometimes annoying, little brother that you'd do anything for.
Even more strange is that her body is miraculously unharmed and she has no memories of boarding the plane. She has no memories of her life before the crash. She has no memories period. No one knows how she survived. No one knows why she wasn’t on the passenger manifest. And no one can explain why her DNA and fingerprints can’t be found in a single database in the world.
Crippled by a world she doesn’t know, plagued by abilities she doesn’t understand, and haunted by a looming threat she can’t remember, Seraphina struggles to piece together her forgotten past and discover who she really is. But with every clue only comes more questions. And she’s running out of time to answer them.
Her only hope is a strangely alluring boy who claims to know her from before the crash. Who claims they were in love. But can she really trust him? And will he be able to protect her from the people who have been making her forget?
From popular young adult author Jessica Brody comes a compelling and suspenseful new sci-fi series, set in a world where science knows no boundaries, memories are manipulated, and true love can never be forgotten.
That being said - I really enjoyed this book. The only negative thing I have to say is maybe about three quarters of the way through it started to drag a little. Not enough to make me think about putting the book down but I just felt it lost some of it's excitement. That's the only thing that bothered me about this book. This story was fascinating. How we meet Seraphina for the first time as the lone survivor of a horrific plane crash to finding out she has absolutely no memories, not even her name. It's like having to learn everything all over again. She can figure out detail math equations or adding large sums easily in her head to the point of which she doesn't even know she's doing it until someone tells her. She's highly intelligent but so incredibly lost.
That is until she sees this mysterious boy. A boy who tells her he knows her and that she's not safe but who can she trust? The media all want to swarm her because they want the story first. That's how the media is - they want the exclusive so they'll do whatever they can to get it. She thinks that's what's happening here. But he knows things no one else could possibly know . . . especially about the only piece of anything she had on her self when she was found.
There was a point in this book (right after the lull) that a twist came and I didn't ever see it coming. I'm still scratching my head going wow, and I didn't think it could get worse but it did. It gets so much worse before it even gets better. It doesn't even get better, really because the book ends. Yes, it just ends. To the point of where your mouth falls open demanding there be more. What person would actually end a book like this? It's pure genius, really but it doesn't mean myself, as a reader, isn't frustrated. Kudos to Jessica Brody - I can't imagine what everyone else went through having to wait for the second book. Thankfully I can just go pick up the second book without a wait.
This book has recently been optioned for film and you know what? This could make a fantastic film. There's a ton of action in it, enough story to definitely keep anyone interested and enough twists and turns to keep it fresh while not losing the viewers attention.
I would like to thank Mary from Macmillan for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Because I was given this book by the publisher, I'm going to pay it forward and give it to one lucky reader who may not have gotten the chance to read this fantastic book yet, either! But what I'm also going to do is throw in an ARC of the second book, Unforgotten, as well. The only downside to winning this is I won't be sending it out until I've read and reviewed it. So, it could be a month if not longer as my review obligations are pretty substantial right now.
