Blog Tour: All That Glows by Ryan Graudin

All That Glows by Ryan Graudin
Release Date: February 11, 2014
Publisher: HarperTeen; 480 pages
Emrys—a fiery, red-headed Fae—always embraced her life in the Highlands, far from the city’s draining technology, until she’s sent to London to rejoin the Faery Guard. But this isn’t any normal assignment—she’s sent to guard Prince Richard: Britain’s notorious, partying bad boy and soon-to-be King. The prince’s careless ways and royal blood make him the irresistible for the dark spirits that feed on mortals. Sweet, disheveled, and alive with adventure—Richard is one charge who will put Emrys’s magic and heart to the test.

When an ancient force begins preying on the monarchy, Emrys must hunt through the London’s magical underworld, facing down Banshees, Black Dogs and Green Women to find the one who threatens Richard’s life. In this chaos of dark magic, palace murders and paparazzi, Emrys finds herself facing an impossible choice. For despite all her powers, Emrys has discovered a force that burns brighter than magic: love.

I am only a quarter of the way through this book and I am just dying of curiosity to know how much research went in to writing this book? Not only is there a ton of detail to history here but there’s the history of fae and the spells that they say – while this is a book of fiction, I can tell a lot has gone in to this book; have you visited places you talk about and how much time was spent online looking up the fine details?

Research is a funny thing, because people assume that you do it all at once. For me, research is more of a lifelong endeavor. I picked up a lot of things over the span of many years. I grew up on stories of Camelot and faery lore, took an Old English class in college (which is what I based the Fae spells on), traveled to London several times, toured Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London when I was sixteen, hiked through the Scottish Highlands with my husband, rode the London Eye on a cloudless day. There were definitely places in the book I haven’t been. And for those I hunted through my London and Britain guidebooks for details I could use to make the locations come to life.

Was the title always “All That Glows” or was it changed along the way? I know a lot of authors don’t get a lot of say in covers, but how much control did you have over the title and what kind of process does have?

The title I gave it while rough drafting was “Godmother” (I called all the guardian Fae godmothers in the first draft) but my agent and I both decided it sounded to old womany. The title was then changed to “Luminance Hour”, which is the title it sold to HarperTeen under. The marketing team decided that was too complicated of a title (and they were right, it was a big tongue twister!) and wanted to change it. I actually came up with a whole list of title suggestions and sent it to my editor. “All That Glows” was on there and they snapped it up straightaway. I was happy to have a title I really loved.

There are a lot of fairies books out there that seem to each have their own take on the history of fairies and their world (though lots of similarities, too) – what is one of your all time favorite fae books/series?

Faeries definitely have a wide birth of lore to draw from (which I think is why many authors have tried their hand at them). I really enjoyed Laini Taylor’s Faeries of Dreamdark books. Her faeries are quite different from mine: tiny, with wings, they hunt things with knives and ride crows. Her world was dreamy and innovative. So unlike ours, yet in ours.

What was one of your favorite scenes to write in All That Glows?

I’m a sucker for fight scenes. So pretty much all of those. I also really enjoyed writing the scene where Breena and Emrys go hunting for soul feeders in London’s largest night club.

If you could co-author a book with any writer, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Oh man. I think I would have a hard time being a co-author, just because I like being in full creative control of my projects. But I do think it would be amazing to work with someone like Joss Whedon. His ideas are phenomenal and his character development is something to be envied. It would be fascinating to see how he worked and to be involved in his creative process. (Firefly forever!!!)

Here's a few questions with the ever swoon-worthy, Prince Richard!

Does it bother you that your family feels you need some growing up to do and that all you seem to do is go out and get pissed every night, sometimes not even remembering what happened while drinking? You’re a Prince, after all, and lots of eyes are always watching you . . .

Like you have to remind me. It isn’t a day that ends in –Y if my bloody face isn’t plastered all over The Sun. But yeah—the family thing. I guess Dad has a point. And Belle does too. But they’ve always found the being a royal thing so easy.

When you first found out about the faery guard that have been protecting your family for generations, what went through your mind (besides the fact that you were freaked out & hardly believing what you were being told)?

Where’s the whisky? There really wasn’t much more room for anything else besides shock and awe. And questioning my mental integrity. Dementia has sprung up on Mum’s side of the family before…

If you could have one of Emrys power (i.e. strength, invisibility, etc.), which would you choose and why?

Veiling spells would really come in handy for all those paparazzi run-ins. So would memory spells. But maybe I’d just fly away… I dunno. Can’t I just keep Emrys around and have all of them? That way it’s a win-win.
