Hell is looking for a way to break loose…
Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world's first murderer, he's plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely… And it's killing him.
After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can't outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she's thrown into the path of a past—and a guy—she's been trying to forget.
Sam strains Jax's control over his darkness, but running isn't an option this time. Someone—or, something—followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge.

This book took me on a trip to my dark side. Demons are evil and dangerous beings but man, who knew they could be so hot? Even if Jax is human sharing his body with a demon?
I've become really interested in New Adult lately but all that's out there seems to be contemporary books that feel too much of the same story with slight differences. To find out that not only one of my favorite authors, Jus Accardo, had a new book out but that it's a New Adult Paranormal? Oh sign me up! I didn't even care what it was about, I'm reading it. Then I read the description and was like oh hell yeah, definitely reading this.
Jax is the perfect bad boy. He's a bad boy with a heart. I know, it sounds like it contradicts itself, right? But no, he's bad but it's not by choice. He's got a demon inside of him (quite literally) and it feeds off of fear and pain. Each demon prefers it's own human emotion to feed from and Jax is so lucky to have his love fear. The only emotion a demon can't feed from is happiness (which I guess would also mean love) because happiness equals good and no demon is down for that. That's what the other guys are for!
There were two things that left me disappointed with this book. One was Sam, or Sammy-for someone whose life was in danger, she didn't appear to be all that worried. Not only had a few attempts been taken on her life already but she knew someone had it out for her and she just shrugged it off. I liked her, as a character, overall except for that. She a freak out moment I think once in the entire book and I'd say I'm quite impressed but it's just not human. To be so nonchalant about it was weird. And two was the lack of romance. No, that's not the right word, the lack of sex. There, I said it. This is New Adult book and while I can tell it is just by the language alone, I guess I was hoping for more romance. I'm not asking for an erotica here (totally not my thing) but just more. I've read a few NA books and they've had more than what we saw in this book. Romance wise, it was only slightly more than YA, which I'd love to see more in the second book.
I loved the idea of this book. A demon sharing the body of a descendant of Cain-I mean, it's brilliant and it was done masterfully. The characters were interesting and real while also leaving a bit of mystery to them (some more than others). The internal battle that went on with Jax was always fascinating to see, whether it was from his point of view or from Sammy's, I really enjoyed that. I hate the demon inside of Jax, at first, but by the end of the book, I wanted to hug him and then some . . .
I want to talk about some of the other characters in this book, Jax's family in particular but I feel like there isn't much to say. Jax has a younger twin brother, Chase, who is the one that is liked and normal. Minus the fact that he sleeps with a different woman every day, he's normal (though I guess that's normal for some). He happens to be one of Sam's best friends, too.
If you're like me and you're liking New Adult but want something that's got a paranormal aspect to it, you need to read this. We don't have many to choose from since most NA is contemporary and this book is a lot of fun, in a dark, twisted way. Jus Accardo's writing is as beautiful as ever and she makes the world and her characters feel so real it's almost as if you're inhabiting Jax's or Sam's body, too!
