I always thought my demons came out in the day, rather than at night. I’ve never been scared of the dark. I’ve only ever been scared of real things: getting ill, having injections, physical pain… death. Those are my monsters, not ghosts or vampires or whatever else can hide under your bed at night.
I was wrong.
The dark makes everything worse.
When Mary’s psychiatrist advises a short stay at a psychiatric unit, her worst nightmares are confirmed. How can she get better in a place that fills her with dread? When she meets the other patients, she begins to gather some hope, until she realises that the death toll in the hospital is rising without explanation. Something sinister stalks the corridors and maybe she is the only one who can stop it…
Mary has to confront the Things that she sees if they are to stand a chance. But will she survive a confrontation with death itself?
After reading The Blemished series by Sarah Dalton, I was in love with her style of writing and wanted to read some more books from her. I saw hat she had written two Blemished novellas and also a gothic novella, My Day Light Monsters. I loved the blurb for this book and wanted to read it right away.
This book feels a lot like the movie, Girl Interrupted. But only for the fact that it takes place in a mental hospital and the main character doesn't really feel like she needs to be there. Everything else is different. Reading the book, I don't feel that Mary is psychotic but usually when anyone expresses things that are different then the norm, they are usually looked at as crazy. Once Mary arrives at the hospital and meets her roommate, I love her right away. She's quirky and knows just how to make you feel comfortable in a place that is less then comfortable. The story is a fun one to read and gets darker page by page.
I loved the climatic ending with this story, it was a page turner and I ended up staying up till 2 am to finish it because I couldn't put it down. The is a novella, only 124 pages, but I would have loved it if it was expanded, but the story came through great, just wanted more!! Cannot wait to read The Blemished novellas!!
Oh, wow. This one sounds really good! Excellent review!
