They thought they had escaped. They were wrong. If you have NOT read Altered, please read with caution. There are some spoilers that were unavoidable. Proceed with caution . . .
After fleeing the Branch with Sam, Cas, and Nick, Anna is trying to make sense of the memories resurfacing from her old life. At the same time, she's learning how to survive in hiding, following Sam's rules: Don't draw attention to yourself. Always carry a weapon. Know your surroundings. Watch your back.
Then a figure from Anna's childhood reappears. Is it a Branch setup, or could it be the reunion Anna has hoped for? Uncertain of where her loyalties lie, Anna must fight to learn the truth -- before she is betrayed again. Ultimately, the answers hinge on one question: What was the real reason her memories were erased?
Jennifer Rush delivers a thrilling sequel to Altered in a novel packed with mysteries, lies, and surprises that are sure to keep readers guessing until the last page is turned.
Not matter what, Trev is and will always be my favorite character from these books. No matter how he betrayed them in Altered, I can't let that stop me. He's so likeable (loveable, actually) and he's a character that stuck in my head since I read the first book a year ago. My wish is for him to get his own book, he deserves one, right?
Nick and Cas are a close second. I may be the only one here but I'm not the biggest fan of Sam. He's boring. Compared to the other guys, he's lacking a personality. I know, not very fair of me but it's how I feel. He's just not as snarky, mysterious, humorous or anything - he's just a leader and that's that. He's a good leader, don't get me wrong and he's good for Anna but just not my favorite. Though, I did enjoy him a lot more in the first book; he still pales in comparison to the guys he was kept in the lab with.
That being said, I loved this book. In some cases more than Altered but in others, not as much. We'll start with my dislikes because it's a small list; I didn't get the same feeling of 'oh my god, this is amazing' while reading. Maybe because I know what to expect or just maybe because it wasn't as much interaction with them as a group? Which brings me to my next dislike - which shouldn't come as a surprise; not enough Trev. A minor dislike, I know, but as a die-hard Trev fan, it's a big deal (though, I understand his lack of appearances). I just miss him so much and come on, so does Anna. But with him missing, the vibe on the group of them is just off balanced.
What I loved? More Nick. He's a tough pill to swallow, at times but we learn more about his past and more importantly, his connection to Anna. It's fascinating and I wanted more. Thankfully, we'll get my wish of wanting more next year when he gets his book which I'm really excited for!
I really loved the flashbacks from Anna's past as her memories slowly start returning. It adds mystery to not only the story but the reader; it adds mystery along with tons of excitement. There's tons more action, which also adds a lot more adventure to our journey, as well. I know, you're probably wondering how there's more action when the first book was packed with it but I'm telling you, there is so much more. Hardly a dull moment in this book (unless Sam is talking...kidding, kidding...sort of...).
I'm glad these books aren't ending, even though Anna and Sam's journey has. Two books is just not enough of these characters and this world that Jennifer Rush has created. If the covers don't grab your attention then the description of these books definitely should. They don't do the book justice but they grab your attention and that's the point (plus, hot shirtless guys on covers? You can't go wrong there!).
