There is need. And then there is Fate.If you have NOT read Half-Blood, please read with caution. There are some spoilers that were unavoidable. Proceed with caution . . .
Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her. When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon--and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude--or killing her. When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.
I think my heart is still getting over this book. There was a part where I had to put the book down and walk away; I was that upset. I needed to get my emotions in check before coming back to read the book. A breather did me good. There was so much that happened in this book that my head nearly exploded. From death, to lots of kissing two guys, yes TWO guys, to someone trying to ruin Alex's life (in more ways than one) to lots of fighting and not just training.
The first half of this book is at the Covenant in North Carolina; there's a daimon attack at the school and they're all convinced it was daimon half-blood so things start getting really sketchy between the students. Pure's don't want anything to do with half's while there are many rules put in place for the safety of everyone though it does seem to be a tad bit more unfair for the half's. There's tension everywhere and in fact, Alex gets into a fight with Lea, shocking, right? I think that happened before the rules were put in to effect but regardless, it was hilarious. It involved an apple and a nose . . .
Then my heart broke. *highlight to view spoiler* I thought Caleb was out of the clear when he didn't die in Half-Blood; I really, really thought this was the case. When he died pushing Lea out of the way and getting stabbed in the chest instead I just about died along with him. He had become my favorite character and I really felt like we got to know him so well. I felt like a friend of mine was just ripped away from me. The emotions Alex was going through, I was going through them as well. As cheesy as that may sound, I was really devastated by it. I still am. I really didn't want it to be true and then . . . the funeral. It was hard. I will not get over it but I continued... *end spoilers*
The second half of the book we leave to drive to New York with a very tense Aiden and Alex while Seth got to fly in the private jet, isn't he lucky? It's a long drive to New York and an even longer time at the counsel there. It's almost like a different kind of life up there. The pure's and half's don't associate with each other, at all. They are extremely old fashion and one of the first things we witness is a trial, in the sense, between a half and pure who are lovers, which is strictly forbidden. It churns my stomach just thinking about it.
Aiden keeps his distance in this book because he knows no matter how he feels about Alex, it would never work with them. He wouldn't risk her losing everything just to have a secret relationship. Everyone knows secret relationships are always found out. It would just be a matter of when not if. It doesn't mean it's easy for him but those times where he struggles to keep control of his emotions, those are some of the hottest moments of this book.
Seth and Alex become closer and I couldn't be more happy about this, though I don't see them working out in the long run, her heart belongs to Aiden. I understand that and I see that but that doesn't mean I can't be happy of a blooming, doomed relationship between Seth and her. It's pretty hot, too. Some crazy things happen between them and they're not what you're thinking, I can assure you. The Apollyon connection between them really takes it's hold and it's quite interesting. I can't wait until she turns 18 and see how everything will be then.
Alex has definitely earned a spot on my girl crush list. She is so awesome. There is absolutely no filter on her and I admire people like that. To be able to say what you feel, when you feel it and not care...if only I had the guts to do that sometimes. She's really hard on herself, though and it really makes me sad. She's made some poor decisions that have had utterly devastating results but who doesn't make mistakes in their lives? No one is perfect; no even the gods.
Best quote from this book (well one of them) because I can so relate. I say this all the time. It's just something clumsy people say to make us look less clumsy!
This series just gets more and more addicting. I'm going to start the next book right now.
