Nearly Broken by Devon Ashley
(Nearly, #1)
Release Date: June 4, 2013
Publisher: Self; 367 pages
We’d both gone missing at one point, but Claire had one thing I didn’t. Someone to notice. So why was I the one still here and she the one still gone?
Nineteen year old Megan Smith has spent the past year working in a small town diner in the middle of nowhere. Life is quiet, simple, safe. Then comes the news that her look-a-like has gone missing.
Claire.
Still damaged both physically and mentally, Megan's not looking to be noticed. Wherever she goes from here, it's a road she needs to take alone. But when Nickolas Ellis takes the job as the new nightshift cook, it scares her how easily her defenses crumble down, down, down for him. But there are secrets she can't bear to share with just anyone, unspeakable acts that continue to haunt, and when the similarities of Claire’s abduction couples with the fear of an unwanted visitor in town, the urge to run before it all happens again intensifies, threatening the only happiness Megan's ever found.
New Adult Romantic Suspense / Realistic Fiction
Recommended for 17+ for mature and disturbing situations, language and sexual content.

A warning, if you somehow missed it in the book's description; the topics of this book are very disturbing and realistic. My review will probably also discuss some of these very difficult topics. Don't say I never warned you . . .
I became a fan of Devon Ashley's after reading her other New Adult book, Falling in Between. I was part of a blog tour for that book and I do believe it was my first ever NA book. I feel in love with her characters, her writing and I knew I wanted to read more of her work. Nearly Broken is my fourth book I've read by her and it's probably the most gut wrenching thing I've ever read. The first half of the book wasn't too bad because it was all in past tense, the bad things that had happened to the main character. The second half of the book . . . well that's a different story.
Nearly Broken is a pretty perfect title for this book and I have to say, props to Megan for never fully breaking. If I were her, and I was put through everything she was put through, I'm not sure I'd have the will to survive or to even fight.
Trying to find the words to describe how I feel has been difficult; but also finding the words to describe how I feel without spoiling this story? Impossible. I'm going to be vague and for that I apologize but I want you to read this book. I want you to go in to this book not knowing too much so you'll enjoy the mystery of it like I have. You'll go in to this book knowing there will be scenes that will make you cringe (sex trafficking and rape scenes, for sure), scenes that will make you smile (there is a GOOD romance in this book), scenes that will make you cry (too many and too spoilery to list) and you may even laugh a few times.
I couldn't put this book down, that much I can say. At times I wanted to because I just couldn't handle this much bad stuff happening to Megan over and over and over again but then I say, if she can be put through this and still come out swinging than there's no reason I can't keep reading. Yes, great logic, right? As vague as this review might be (again, I apologize for that), if you can stomach a story that involves kidnapping, memory loss, sex trafficking, drugs (very little), rape and violence than I recommend this story. If you can stomach rough situations like that, believe me, I understand.
Also, I must bow down to Devon for not only writing a story involving all that it does, but making it classy enough that it feels very real but also interesting enough that you want to keep reading, even when the going gets tough.
Thank you to YA Bound Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour. Thank you to Devon Ashley for providing me with a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. You can check out the full Nearly Broken tour here!
