This book takes place in Maryland which makes my heart soar. I seriously love reading books that take place where I live because then it's like I'm truly living in the adventure; I know where these places are so it makes it more real. Only, in this case, I'm glad it's not real because I wouldn't survive with the zombies. I wish I would but yeah, I definitely wouldn't see that happening.
This story starts out with Aaron's father, Joe, at his work when the zombie epidemic begins. It's gruesome & terrifying but somehow . . . not. You sit here, reading page after page just hoping for characters survival only to see most of them go. Obviously being eaten by zombie's isn't ideal but what's worse? Completely being devoured by one and staying dead or getting bitten only to become one?
Aaron was born the night the world we know went to hell. He survives being born and is taken away by his father (Joe), his mother's best friend (Margie), a cop who was at the hospital with his sister (Frank) and a nurse (Denise). They live a happy, closed off life together for a good thirteen years or so until a trip in to town to get supplies goes seriously wrong. That's when Aaron finds out just how different he is and how important he is. But it's also the day he is forced to grow up because, like it or not, he's on his own.
Fast forward until Aaron is twenty-three and things get super interesting. He's actually become so used to living around the undead that he can't sleep without hearing their moans and shuffling. It's kind of creeping but when you've had ten years of surviving on your own being surrounded by them, it makes sense. Especially since he can stand amongst them and be completely ignored. It's fascinating to see, actually. And a part of me is super jealous because he's the only known person to be so lucky.
There's a build up to a romance that I absolutely love soooooo much! Samantha is a loner; someone who never does anything for anyone else unless she gets something out of it. It's how she's survived. It's the only way she knows to survive. She was born a few years after the undead started walking the earth so she knows no other form of life. She has no friends and makes it clear that she wants no friends.
The set up she lives in at the Lexington High School is pretty brilliant. There's roughly around 60 people who make things work and surprisingly do a fantastic job of it. There's so many different characters at this place and most of them are people I'd want surrounding me. There's a few who I'd rather see eaten by the zombies.
I think the beginning of the book had really weird pacing but after reading the book you understand the pacing (If not, this book would've been dragged out and just bored the reader to death). It was a perfect book for zombie lovers; in fact, I'm lending it to my friend who loves a good zombie read and I'm certain she'll love it. It's also the perfect book for someone like me, who isn't a big fan of zombies but loves a good story, with good characters and a nice romance added in. Take a chance with this book, I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I’ve been writing since I was twelve years old. There’s just something about creating a story that I like. I always try come up with something that hasn’t been done, or is unique in some way. It could be someone with demonic powers, or something much more simple, such as a person that zombies ignore. It’s fun to create a character, give him or her a personality and background, and watch them evolve through a story.
I’ve tried other subjects, but always drift back to horror and paranormal. There’s a reason why we keep going back to horror movies and books, why they’ve made fifty Friday the 13th movies. People like to be scared, but more than that, I think paranormal and horror stir the imagination like nothing else. We’re all just a little nervous to open that closet door at midnight, or look under the bed.
