Now that I have the cover out of the way, what's in between those precious covers is loads better, much better. Eleanor is getting over everything that happened to her in the previous book including losing her right hand, her brother and the man she was set to marry plus her mother is not well, mentally and she's still coping with the fact that Daniel told her he didn't love her. This is a lot for one person to be dealing with plus add on the fact that your families name is no longer what it once was and most people in town shun you. Not a good time for Miss Fitt.
Every person goes through a fade of who they can trust and who they can't. Every person always makes a mistake. Sometimes it can ruin a relationship or sometimes it can make it stronger. The question is, how do you ever know which outcome will come from keeping secrets? Some secrets are not told because you're not sure who to trust, you're not sure how someone might react. I find Eleanor's troubles to be very relatable, no matter the age of the reader. There's so much she is keeping to herself and lying to others that she gets to a point where she just explodes. When we get to that point, I applaud her for how she handled it and I'm glaring at you, Spirit Hunters, for how you handled it.
Everyone who read Something Strange and Deadly fell in love with Mr. Daniel Sheridan. Don't try and deny it; you did. Then every one of us felt the same hurt Eleanor felt at the end of the book but we knew, just knew, that what he said wasn't the whole truth. Reading the novella, A Dawn Most Wicked gave us more insight in to that ending and assured us we were right. Daniel is a different man in this book but only on the outside. He's wearing nice suits, top hats, the whole nine yards and even reading a book on manners. The way he talks makes us scratch our heads and wonder where the Daniel we knew went. He didn't go anywhere, I assure you. He's there.
There's a few new characters introduced in this book; one of them being Oliver who I absolutely adore. No, he's not part of a love triangle - I assure you, there is none. He is someone who was very dear and close to Eleanor's brother, Elijah. He's such an interesting character and as Eleanor is trying to figure out if she can trust him, we're wondering the same thing. You're not sure exactly what his true motives are and it puts you on edge when he shows up. But regardless of that, I love him oh so much! He's such a passionate character, which is kind of surprising but I can't say why. When you find out everything there is to know about him (you find out rather early) then you'll probably be just as surprised as me. I cannot wait for more of him in the next book! I'm giddy just thinking about it.
The story was rather dark for the first novel but this, somehow, manages to get darker still. Eleanor taps in to something she probably shouldn't and it opens a whole new can of worms. Very vague, I know - but do you really want me to spoil this book for you? I didn't think so. I just can't get over how much I've fallen in love with this series. It's fascinating, dark, creepy, yet filled with so much light, romance and hope that it's a perfect blend of everything. Read the first book then read the novella and then read this when it comes out. Join us misfits...
