Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.
Until something does.
Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.
And so is someone else…
Warning there will be spoilers from My Soul to Take in this review. If you haven't read My Soul to Take and My Soul to Save and don't want to be spoiled, I suggest you proceed with caution.
Wow. That seriously was my first thought once I finished reading the third novel in the Soul Screamers series. I can't even begin to describe the emotions that were running through my mind as I read this book. In fact, I was going to write my review immediately after finishing this book. But my emotions were running all over the place, so I decided to sleep on it, and review it with a clear mind the next morning. But make no mistake even with my crazy feelings, My Soul to Keep is definitely my favorite book so far in this series.
My Soul to Keep start out pretty normal. Our resident Bean Sidhe's Kaylee and Nash are at a high school party. It's been about a month since the events of My Soul to Save. Tod, Nash's deceased brother, who was once a Bean Sidhe, but is now a reaper shows up and Kaylee is a little surprised to see him. Kaylee hasn't seen Tod since the death of Addison. Tod informs Kaylee that her best friend Emma, who is currently intoxicated is about to get into a car with one of Nash's friends who is also intoxicated. After convincing Emma not to drive off with not to drive off with him, Kaylee discovers that Nash's friend Doug is not intoxicated from alcohol. But from the highly addictive and extremely dangerous Netherworld substance Demons Breath.
From this turn of events the wild ride of he novel really begins. Kaylee and Nash find themselves trying to figure out how humans are getting access to Demons Breath, and are trying to put a stop to it. But there were definitely many twist and turns along the way. Along with a shocking confession that caused me to put the book down for a few hours because my heart was broken.
It can be a little difficult being a reader sometimes. There are times in which we figure things out before the characters do. And even though you know it's going to happen, you can't exactly predict how the characters will react when they find out. And let me tell you something, this character's reaction hurt me. I really felt their pain. I credit this to the amazing writing by the author. For an author to make me feel this way, and to pull out such a raw emotion from me doesn't always happen. Sometimes horrible things happen in a book, and I'll just shrug my shoulders, or not even bat an eyelash. That was definitely not the case here. In fact, it's been a full 24 hours since I read that scene, and I am still thinking about it.
One of the things I really love about this series is how connected each of the books are. The events in the previous books all still come in to play as the series continues. For example Sophie still blames and hates Kaylee for her mother's death from the first book My Soul to Take. And after the events that took place in this book, I am pretty sure they will be an important basis for the next book, My Soul to Steal.
