Unmaking Hunter Kennedy by Anne Eliot
Release Date: October 17, 2012
Publisher:Butterfly Books, LL; 422 pages
After a car accident--an event he considers a prank gone bad--pop star, Hunter Kennedy is forced to hide out with his aunt in small-town Colorado. He’s supposed to rest, heal his scars and attend high school in disguise until the press dies down. But he only wants to get back to work.
Worse, the girl who’s been assigned to make him over into a geek is a major geek herself. Vere Roth is a chattering pixie, a blushing tornado and a complete social disaster. He’s never met a girl who’s never-been-kissed, believes in romance and thinks Hunter’s a 'nice' guy.
Funny thing is...Hunter is nice around Vere because she’s his first real friend. He also can’t seem to stop sharing his secrets or keep her out of his heart. Knowing he’d never deserve a girl as sweet as Vere, he resigns himself to the friend zone, and helps his new bestie with her own makeover.
She tortures him daily for ridiculous guy advice on how to snag her life-long crush. A guy Hunter thinks is totally wrong for Vere, and sadly, one who has taken note of Vere’s transformation.
When Vere asks her best friend for some kissing advice, Hunter can’t resist...
And that’s when things get out of control...
This book is every fan girls fantasy come to life. I think every fan girl, myself included, has thought of different scenarios at least once about how we could secretly fall in love with a rock star without the whole world knowing. Become their best friend and make them fall in love with us. This is what that story is, but it isn't a fan girl trying to make her idol fall in love with her, it is about a girl trying to help out her bestie get his life back together.
I love the idea of how this story goes down. It isn't as typical as you may think, and everything that happens to Hunter that gets him to the small Colorado town is very believable and you feel like this is something that would happen. I love the fact that the Ross family is included in this whole "helping Hunter" scenario. It isn't a girl becoming the under cover famous guys friend and they poof fall in love. Vere knows this is Hunter Kennedy and she knows how gorgeous and jaded he is.
I liked crazy and eccentric Vere right away. I think or feel she's made out in this book to be more of a completely nerd, total opposite of Hunter, but almost too much. I think instead of a nerd, she just doesn't really care what people think and dresses how she wants and always wears her hair in a bun, but I do not think most people think she is an ugly duckling. I feel that she has natural beauty and just doesn't know how to enhance it and hides from everyone because of her blushing issues, but in no way do I feel she is an ugly duckling.
I loved the relationship that blossomed between Vere and Dustin (aka Hunter). I love how she is not afraid to speak her mind with him, and he is quick to come right back at her. They compliment each other right away from the beginning. I love the progression of their feelings, more so Hunter's in this book too. You can slowly watch Hunter fall in love with Vere and it is just too fricken cute!!
There were a few times I found myself in tears. One part was when we finally hear about Hunter's story. How and why he ended up in Colorado. Just thinking about it gives me tears in my eyes. And of course the ending, I was a blubbering idiot as usual. I'm a sucker for happy endings and this ending was simply beautiful!!

Hunter's a guy who's lived an odd life growing up with a single mom as an isolated pop-star. He's spent his days living in front of TV cameras, on stages, and being everyone's public puppet, all while hiding out from Paparazzi cameras during his down time. Because of this lifestyle, he's also very lonely, shut down, guarded and often bored. One night, he realizes too late, that he's also depressed and has no one, not even his mom, to talk to. He trashes his car, his house and sadly, even himself--a move that lands him in a residential home for depressed teens.
The cool side to Hunter is that he's not really stuck up. He's humble and pretty wounded inside. He thinks, because of his past, and what he's done in his life, that he's not good enough for Vere. He's got this kind heart and even though he's famous and tough (and hot--though he does not think he's any big deal) he doesn't see himself as good enough. Vere deserves a guy who knows how to be a good boyfriend, and Hunter knows he could never be that. Because they are friends, Hunter is brutally honest about what he thinks with Vere--and Vere is not the kind of girl to think any sort of famous-pop star would ever fall in love with her--a trait that only makes Hunter love Vere more--
But the truth about him…and the facts about his past, and how he's leaving in a few weeks…can't stop how much Hunter longs to be Vere Roth's very first kiss...
