I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after.
I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I’ve poured my soul into my music, but I’ve never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.
And now I’m going back.
After ten years.
I hope I can explain that after all this time.
I still want her to be my forever girl.
It's so exciting reading a book of someone's you've been friends with for a few years. I can't imagine how nerve-wracking it is for Heidi knowing her friends are reading something that's so dear to her; her first published novel. Not knowing if friends are going to truly like it or not but you know what? It was amazing. I'm saying this as a reader not as a friend...it was a fantastic read. It had me cheering for Liam from the get-go and I never once stopped. It's also so different from what I'm reading about 98% of the time and it's refreshing and steamy.
Liam had everything and then he threw it all away for his chance to become a musician. He wanted nothing more than to bring his girl, Josie, with him but he didn't think she'd agree to come along so he thought it'd be better to make a clean break but this also included leaving behind his best friend since kindergarten. Ten years later, his best friend, Mason, is the reason he's returning to his hometown. Liam is coming to pay respects to a friend he left behind and life time full of regrets he'll have for never being there like they promised each other.
From the beginning of the book, finding out that Mason was tragically taken from this world way too soon, breaks your heart. This is even before we form any sort of bonds with the characters but as the story progresses not only do you find yourself becoming close with our two main characters, Liam and Josie but also forming a bond with Katelyn and Mason. The flashbacks from their teenage years makes us sad that Mason is no longer there. How he was part of this perfect equation and now it'll never be the same.
We throw in to this equation that Josie is engaged to Nick Ashford, who was a guy who was always after her all throughout high school. This infuriates Liam more than anything. He was hoping she'd have moved on with a great guy, have an amazing family but when he finds out it's with Nick, he's anything but happy. Another bump in the road for both Liam and Josie? There's this 9 year old boy, Noah, who looks just like Liam...and happens to be Josie's son...
Liam Page, the rocker is an asshole. Liam Westbuy, the small town guy is a gentleman who loves with whole heart. It's hard to imagine they are, truly, one in the same person. Almost like split personality disorder going on...but not.
This book is not only a book about a second chance at the love of his life but also the second chance at the life he always had mapped out for himself. It might have taken him ten years to realize just how great his mistake was but he does everything in his power to make up for the ten years and show Josie just how serious he is about sticking around this time. If only she'd have him again...
Love all the characters, except maybe Nick. But I can sympathize with him. The woman he's been involved with for the past six years and the girl he's loved for at least the past fourteen years never truly go over her ex. It's got to be heartbreaking to watch this from the sidelines and not being able to do anything about it. He's still a dick but sometimes, I wanted to give him an awkward hug and just tell him, buddy - there's plenty more beautiful fishes in the sea. Get out there and find one whose right for you because it ain't Josie. Honestly, my favorite characters were probably two of the kids. Peyton, one of Mason & Katelyn's twin daughters and Noah, Josie's lil boy.
Also, I love the tie in with football in this book. I've been waiting and waiting to read a book that had a lot of football in it and alas, I have found it! I absolutely expected this from Heidi because I know she is a big football fan, like myself. Go out, buy this book and fall in love with everyone in Beaumont like I have! (Do keep in mind that this book is NOT YA so please, older audiences only)
