Welcome to our stop along the FRACTURE blog tour with Bloomsbury books! As you know, FRACTURE is one of my favorite books that I got the pleasure in reading in 2011. It was just released on January 17, 2012 and I truly hope you decide to pick up this book and read it. It will blow you away, I assure you.
If you want to read my review, you can catch it here!
I got the opportunity to ask Megan a few questions and I'm quite excited about. So, without further ado, please welcome Megan Miranda!
How did you come about writing this book? Or is this something you've always wanted to do?Writing was something I always wanted to do… but I spent a lot of time not doing it. I used to write in high school, and then spent about 8 years afterwards not writing while I pursued science. Or at least not writing consistently. It wasn’t until my kids were 1 and 3 when it occurred to me, for a second time, that if I loved writing, I should take a real shot at it. Fracture was my shot at it (though it took me 3 times to get it right).
Did you have to do a lot of research about the brain in order to prepare for Fracture?I had to do a lot of fact-checking. I have a background in science, and I’ve picked up a lot of odd facts along the way, but I did a lot of research about first-hand accounts and what the recovery process would normally be like. I also had to research how the tests in the hospital scenes would work.
How long a process was this from when you started writing Fracture to when it was signed with Bloomsbury?
I wrote the first line of the first version of Fracture in early July 2009, I believe. Or thereabouts. It sold to Bloomsbury (the third version) in May 2010.
Was Fracture the first novel you tried getting published?Yes, it was.
Fracture is a standalone book, have you ever thought of writing a series or is there one in the works, perhaps?
I haven’t, actually. I’ve written another standalone, set to come out in 2013, and I’m working on yet another. My favorite part of writing is the discovery phase: learning who the characters are and getting an understanding of the relationships. I like to start with new characters. I’m not saying never, but I’m definitely drawn to the standalone.
What inspires you to write?I find a lot of inspiration from my science background—though it comes mostly in the form of the things we don’t quite understand yet. I’ve always been drawn to those stories: the anomalies, or the flukes, and I’ve always wondered why? Why them? And how? The questions fuel my writing along.
What was/is your favorite book from 2011?
Really tough call…but I’m going to go with Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma
If there was one author you could go on a book tour with, who would it be & why would you choose them?
For purely selfish reasons, I’d want to go with my critique partner, Jill Hathaway (author of SLIDE). We’ve never met in person, but I owe her many, many drinks J
Do you have a favorite book that you keep going back to to read it over time and time again?
I’m not much of a re-reader…but I’ll definitely re-read passages. There are books that feel like comfort when I start reading, and usually they’re ones from my childhood. Number the Stars, Heart of Darkness, anything by Edgar Allan Poe.
Is there any character in Fracture that holds a special place in your heart? One that might have a deeper connection to you than the others?
Not really one over the other, but it sometimes surprises people that they ALL have a place in my heart. Yes, even that one. Characters develop over time for me…they don’t start out as one thing or the other, but develop as the story does. It was actually pretty difficult to write a certain character making certain choices… Alas.
Thanks for having me!
