Aura’s life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can’t deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she’s not sure that she wants to.

Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.

As Aura’s search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart.

What would you do if the man that you love, who has been dead for months suddenly came back to life for 15 minutes? It's a situation that Aura is suddenly thrust into in Shift, the second book in the Shade trilogy. After the events in Shade where towards the end of the book, Aura's boyfriend turned ghost Logan turns into a shade (A ghost who has no boundaries where he or she can go, and is considered a threat to the living) when he cannot pass on into the afterlife. After briefly bringing Logan back from a shade at the end of Shade, Aura has spent the past 3 months trying to bring Logan permanently back to a ghost. But while Logan has been gone, Aura has started adjusting to life without Logan. She has grown closer to Zachary and has started repairing friendships. And just when it seems like Aura and Zach will finally start a romantic relationship, Logan returns and Aura is able to help him transform back into a ghost. But afterwards a bit of a miracle happens, and Logan turns into a human. Overcome with shock and passion, Aura and Logan resume where they left off on Logan's birthday and almost make love. Unfortunately for Aura and Logan (or fortunately for the Aura and Zach fans of the series) their delaying in trying to decide whether they would need to use protection or not, causes them not enough time to have sex and Logan turns back into a ghost.

The events at the beginning of Shift set the tone for the novel. Now if I were in Aura's shoes, I would probably do the same thing. Sometimes the shock of something, especially something that is technically impossible causes us to make rash decisions. Aura grew up with Logan, and was in love with him for the majority of her teen life. Yes, Zach is an amazing person, and it's obvious that he and Aura have a connection. But Logan has been her steady, her rock since she was young.

When Zach finds out what almost transpired between Aura and Logan, he is furious. Now to be honest his reaction kind of shocked me. Zach has always been a constant, and he's always been very patient with Aura. I think his patience is one of the things that causes the fans to love him so much. What grieving person wouldn't want someone to wait for them until they are ready to move on? But his reaction also reminds readers that Zach is human. Humans can only take so much before we just want to give up no matter how much we want it.

Majority of the novel is Aura deciding to let Logan go romantically, and trying to pursue a romantic relationship with Zach. But of course there are numerous things in the way of this happening. One of which is a sudden unexpected new love interest for Aura. I'm not gonna say who it is because I am very anti spoilers. But I do not agree with this love interest at all, in fact I think it just makes Aura take steps backwards in trying to move on from Logan. It's not that I don't like this character because I do very much. I just don't think he and Aura fit well together, and would be together for all the wrong reasons.

Now this review would not be complete with out talking about "the shift" in Shift we learn a little bit more about it. But once again I find myself confused with the details. I am starting to think that it may just be me. I have a hard time understanding anything science fiction. It's not that I don't like science fiction, it's just explanations tend to go right over my head. For instance, I am a huge fan of the show Doctor Who. But I have to watch each episode twice to fully understand them. I've always been amazed that Zach was the last to be born before the shift and Aura was the first born after the shift. The fact that Aura and Zach have the same birthday is kinda cute, it makes them soul mates in a way.

Shift was entertaining for me from beginning to the end. The book really gelled well. In Shade I felt the climax was a little predictable, but not in Shift. There were numerous things that took me by surprise. The ending made me very excited for Shine to come out in May 2012.
