The fate of a cursed nation depends on a princess who must outwit a mortal enemy and outlast the trials of a death-defying ritual in a thrilling adventure by USA Today bestselling author Sariah Wilson.
Lia is the princess of Locris, a dying desert nation cursed centuries ago by an earth goddess—one still worshipped by the thriving and adversarial nation of Ilion. Every year, Ilion offers the goddess a two Locrian maidens forced to compete in a life-and-death race to reach her temple. In a millennium, no maiden has made it out of Ilion alive. This year, Lia is one of the hunted.
An education in battle gives her a fighting chance, but the challenges are greater than she Lia’s beloved but untrained sister Quynh has been put in the path of danger. The winding streets of Ilion itself have been transformed into a labyrinthine maze of countless choices and dead ends. And if the risks weren’t significant enough, Lia is reluctantly drawn to the commandingly attractive Jason, an Ilionian sailor she loathes to trust and desires like no man before.
The tribute game is on. It’s up to Lia to lift the goddess’s curse, restore Locris to its former glory, and change the fate of every young woman destined to follow in her path.
I got this book as an Amazon First Reads and I originally heard about it through TikTok and I'm so glad that I did.
It's been awhile since I've read Young Adult so it was a bit of an adjustment but I didn't mind. Most of this book was fast paced and intriguing.
I enjoyed our FMC Lia, a lot. You first meet her being chased by an army with arrows and spears aiming to harm or disable her so right away, this story starts off with a bang and a ton of action. Sure, we have no idea what's going on or why she's in this situation but c'mon, that's what pulls you in to the story. We want to find out why this is happening to her. She's a strong, independent, intelligent and loyal woman who puts family above everything else.
Our MMC is mysterious and sexy wile also being brave, strong and romantic. The more we see of Jason, the more both Lian and the reader (or at least, myself) fall in love. And what a journey it ends up being.
The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is because first, I knew one of the twists from very early on. Not that there was any visible signs but just predictable, if you will? I'm not mad at it, even know it ahead of time; I was actually more excited about it, if I'm being honest but we, are readers, do like to be surprised and shocked but that wasn't there for this. There were a couple of other twists that I didn't see coming so I was pleasantly surprised by those, at least. I also felt like the book did drag a little bit in the middle; not enough to want to stop reading it but enough that it didn't really make me super eager to pick up my kindle to continue reading.
