I'm going to agree with some of the ladies so far on this tour - I couldn't respond to this email quick enough when it popped up on my phone. I didn't even read all the instructions until hours later, when I read it again on my computer. I was embarrassed but I sent another email following the instructions (with many apologies). I'm so relieved to see I wasn't the only one!
I'm so honored to be featuring, not only the talented but the lovely, Mary E. Pearson today on the blog! She's here to talk about True Love in her Remmant Chronicles just a little over a week before it all comes to an end! Are you as excited as I am?!
I asked Mary: How much research and time goes into making sure you portray not only the romance/love aspect flawlessly but all the war, the fighting and everything that goes with it?
A lot. But one thing that I keep foremost in my mind is motivation. Things can’t just happen. And that brings me back to character. All the “war strategies” and moves need to relate organically to the players involved. Yes, things happen out of their control which they have to react to, but one thing always has to lead to another logically, and the characters have to stay in character and if they don’t, it is because they are still logically pushed to some limit. So there is a constant weaving back and forth of character and plot, both of them growing together. I think that is what can make both the character and the war side of a story believable.
With that said, I did research famous battles including Napoleon’s Waterloo, military logistics, different kinds of military defenses, the bloodiest battles in history, and the motivations that ignite war in the first place. Among the causes: An imbalance of wealth and resources, a loss of hope, the desire to preserve a way of life, and the goal to gather more resources—which is essentially a quest to stockpile power.
All of these things relate to real people and their own motivations, so when I wrote about the growing conflict in these books and the potential for war, these motivations were seen in real characters. The Komizar for instance, wants more resources for his people, but more than that, he is driven by his own need for more power. That is what fuels him. Morrighan is driven by their need to preserve their way of life—to keep things status quo.
I also did a fair amount of time conjuring “new” weapons, looking at a lot of medieval weaponry, and thinking of ways it could be made even more lethal. In The Beauty of Darkness we will find an automatic crossbow that shoots multiple iron bolts at a time, and then of course, there are the brezalots mentioned in The Heart of Betrayal, charging giant horses loaded with explosives that can bring down a whole battalion of soldiers.
But again, back to character, all of this is seen horrifically through the eyes of Lia—she sees the human toll it will take, and so do we. It is not just about a faceless conflict, but one that will take the lives of real people Lia loves.
